Exhibited at Melbourne Design Fringe 2024, for the theme "We Have Shared Bread and Salt"
When we come together to make decisions, who speaks for the largely unseen natural world? Who voices the needs of the algae and bacteria, the branches that rot at the water’s edge?
What if the more-than-human world had a seat at our tables?
The Salt Lake Seat is homage to the curious foam structures that form on the banks of the Salt Lake in Westgate Park (Bunurong Country)
Made of salt, algae and decomposed organic matter, these fleeting assemblages are a tangible expression of an unseen world.
As humans we are not, and will never be separate to the vast web of life that supports us. If the plants, animals and microbes we depend upon were invited to our tables, perhaps we would remember our indebtedness to them, and our responsibility to maintain the delicate balance of the fragile ecosystems which we share.
